Monitoring Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies with High-Resolution Satellite Imagery

چکیده
The United States Fish and Wildlife Service has determined that the black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) warrants listing as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. Central to any conservation planning for the black-tailed prairie dog is an appropriate detection and monitoring technique. Because coarse-resolution satellite imagery is not adequate to detect black-tailed prairie dog colonies, we examined the usefulness of recently available high-resolution (l-m) satellite imagery. In 6 purchased scenes of national grasslands, we were easily able to visually detect small and large colonies without using image-processing algorithms. The Ikonos (Space ImagingTM) satellite imagery was as adequate as large-scale aerial photography to delineate colonies. Based on the high quality of imagery, we discuss a possible monitoring program for blacktailed prairie dog colonies throughout the Great Plains, using the species' distribution in North Dakota as an example. Monitoring plots could be established and imagery acquired periodically to track the expansion and contraction of colonies.

Attributes of Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies in Northcentral Montana
We examined several characteristics of black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies in Phillips County, Montana, including slope, aspect, soils, land tenure, and distance from roads using a geographic information system (GIs). Colonies exhibited significantly smaller slopes, but not significantly different aspects than did randomly located polygons. In addition, colonies were more p...

The black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus), a large burrowing rodent found in grasslands of the western Great Plains, once occurred over approximately 40 million ha before European settlement (13). Prairie dogs (C. ludovicianus, C. leucurus, C. gunnisoni, and C. parvidens) covered approximately 283 million ha in the late 1800s Vascular Plant Communities Associated with Black-tailed Pra...

Burrows within black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies on the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, Colorado, were dusted with deltamethrin insecticide to reduce flea (Insecta: Siphonaptera) abundance. Flea populations were monitored pre- and posttreatment by combing prairie dogs and collecting fleas from burrows. A single application of deltamethrin significantly re...
متن کاملRelation of Black-tailed Prairie Dogs and Control Programs to Vegetation, Livestock, and Wildlife
Black-tailed prairie dogs, Cynomys ludovicianus (Ord), have been considered to be pests on shortgrass and mixedgrass prairies of central North America since the late 1800's (Merriam 1902). Because prairie dogs compete for forage with livestock, massive prairie dog control programs were initiated and are still a common practice (Schenbeck 1982). Prairie dog control also has been justified to red...
متن کاملInfluence of Fire on Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colony Expansion in Shortgrass Steppe
Factors influencing the distribution and abundance of black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies are of interest to rangeland managers because of the significant influence prairie dogs can exert on both livestock and biodiversity. We examined the influence of 4 prescribed burns and one wildfire on the rate and direction of prairie dog colony expansion in shortgrass steppe of south...
